Massage therapy industry thrives to support healthcare delivery

The management of Sweet Curls International Massage on Thursday said the massage therapy industry in Ghana is thriving to support healthcare delivery.

A statement from the Management of the facility, copied to the Ghana News Agency in Accra, said the thought of the industry shrinking could be frightening, “but now the industry has passed that stage and is developing progressively”.

It said the massage industry currently showed no signs of slowing down when it came to its overall growth.

Though medical practitioners were suspicious of massage years ago, they had now accepted it and considered it as harmless, the statement said.

“Even though some considered it harmless at best, others lumped it together with other alternative modalities such as chiropractic treatment as nothing more than a waste of their patients’ time and money.”

“In recent years, though this has changed dramatically, part of the reason for the change is the number of Ghanaians who have begun to discuss the topic of massage with their doctors or healthcare practitioners,” it said.

The statement said Ghana should begin to discuss the integration of massage into the healthcare industry as a whole to fully cater for the needs of clients.

“Every client is different, some come in with a sports-related injury, while others might be suffering from chronic pain that’s been with them for years,” it said.

“Still others may have suffered an acute injury as the result of a car accident or something similar and, of course, there are a large number of clients who simply want to de-stress with a massage every now and then”.

The statement said clients appeared to be demanding an increasing amount of personalisation as part of their overall massage experience.

“The average client doesn’t want to receive the exact same massage that everyone else gets when they come into your office.”

“When clients come in, they feel that they should be able to describe their current condition, sometimes at great length, and then have you formulate a customised treatment strategy for their particular issue, that’s exactly what we at Sweet Curls Massage offer our clients”.

The statement said the facility had mechanisms to ensure and offer a wide variety of massage modalities with tools necessary to give clients what they wanted.
