Ghana to have vaccine manufacturing plant

The government of Ghana has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with two German firms to have a human vaccine manufacturing plant in the country.

Merck and RMS will spearhead the project with a feasibility study expected to be done in 2018. Ghana will be able to produce its own vaccine as well as the development of vaccine for the continent. After the feasibility study, a contract will be signed over the realisation of the project within the next five years.

Ghana’s Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia supervised the signing of the agreement on the sidelines of a three-day visit of the German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier.

Ghana has also an MOU with two German companies for the construction of a 330 Megawatt power plant in Ghana. The gas fired combined cycle plant will be constructed by Siemens AG and Rotan Energy Pte.

The project which is expected to be the cheapest of its kind on the Ghanaian market will reduce the cost of electricity upon completion.

About 35 business organisations including Siemens, Bosch, Merck paid a courtesy call on Dr Bawumia at the Flagstaff House. The meeting discussed avenues to help strengthen the economic cooperation between Ghana and Germany and explored areas to deepen bilateral trade.
