The number of individuals who registered for the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) in the Eastern Region during the third quarter of this year was 732,439, the Eastern Regional Director of Health Services, Alhaji Seidu Sampson, has said.

He noted that the figure was enough proof that the scheme was not collapsing even though he admitted various challenges were being encountered.

He said comments by critics that the scheme had collapsed come to him as a surprise.

The NHIS was established by the government of Ghana, with a goal to provide equitable access and financial coverage for basic health care services to Ghanaian citizens.

The regional director, who was speaking in an interview with Class News in Koforidua on Tuesday, November 29, added: “The people know the importance and are registering to benefit from it, so naturally one cannot say it is collapsing… Every institution has challenges and you try to work around it and move ahead.”
