Ahanta West District suffers Cholera outbreak

Ahanta West District in the Western Region has recorded four (4) cases of the Cholera disease, District Chief Executive (DCE) Joseph Dofoyena has confirmed.

Speaking to Radio360 in Takoradi on Friday morning, the DCE indicated that he received a report from the District Health Directorate at the start of the week that three (3) of the cases had been confirmed to be cholera after investigations.

According to him, two (2) can be found at Azane, one (1) at Nfuma and the last at Mpenysa, all suburbs in the Western region.

He said they were yet to establish the cause of the outbreak since it was noted last year that someone brought it into the district on returning from a journey.

Mr. Dofoyena hinted that the health directorate and the Environmental Unit of the District Assembly, as a matter of urgency, have fumigated the houses of the affected persons to prevent further spreading.

Again, he said, they were not relenting on efforts to go to every community and educate them on proper sanitary practices in order not to be infected with any sickness, saying there is a plan drawn to that effect.

For a curb of Cholera spread in the district, the DCE called for attitudinal change in the manner sanitation practices are observed.

Last year, World Health Organization (WHO) Situational Report on Cholera Outbreak in Ghana indicated the country had recorded some 591 confirmed cholera cases with five deaths between January and May this year.

The report noted that cases were recorded in 29 districts across eight regions over the period. The only regions spared were Northern and Upper East.

Aside western, this year, Cholera cases have been reported in some parts of Accra and Cape Coast as well.
