Ahanta West records new HIV cases

Out of the 130 people living with HIV and AIDS in the Ahanta West District, four are children.

A report on pregnant mothers from the district health department said out of the 1,462 tested, 23 positive results were found.

Nana Odow Kwasi, Assembly Member for Domiabra, speaking at the Regional Celebration of World AIDS day, said over the period, the district AIDS committee and the response management team has worked to increase awareness and community participation with support from development partners.

The theme for the celebration was: meeting the health needs of children towards an HIV free generation”.

He said clubs and committees have been formed in schools to train peer educators for schools and measures have been put in place to improve the quality of HIV prevention services.

Nana Kwasi said other measures include couples and community counselling, condom promotion and optimizing antiretroviral therapy for HIV prevention.

Mr Kwame Oppong-Ntim, Acting Regional Technical Coordinator, said the technical support plan for the region was working to meet the needs of the districts.

He said critical access to paediatric care was also key to controlling the epidemic among children.
