Rotaract Club holds oral health screening for students

The Rotaract Club of Accra Ring Road Central in partnership with Rotary Club of Ring Road Central, has organised a day’s free oral health screening exercise in Accra for students of Kanda Cluster of Schools.

Dubbed: “The Sanitation and Dental Hygiene Community Project,” it was targeted at the young with the aim of promoting oral hygiene culture among them.

Apart from the screening exercise, Rotaract Club of Accra Ring Road Central also presented washing basins, soaps, sanitizers, mouthwashes, toothbrushes and toothpastes to the students as well as the schools.

Mr Ahmed Ibrahim, President, Rotaract Club of Accra Ring Road Central, who made the presentation, said it was part of the social responsibilities of the body to respond to the needs of the less privileged in the society.

He said sanitation is an essential part of life and one of the most pressing Millennium Development Goals that the nation is struggling to achieve.

He said children being the future leaders of the country: “We as a club whose primary goals include promoting better education, sanitation, health among others decided to give to the kids to promote hygiene,” he said.

Mr Ibrahim told the Ghana News Agency in an interview that the project which was a half year initiative also sought to educate the kids on the basic need to maintain oral hygiene and good sanitation.

On the choice of school, the President said the cluster of school falls within the club’s district of operation, and being a public academic entity, members noticed that a lot of things are lacked on the campus hence the decision for the support.

He noted that the project which was estimated at GH? 4000 was funded through fundraising activities and was sponsored by Unilever Ghana Limited and Cedar Point Chemists.

Mr Ibrahim however called on other corporate bodies support the worthy course.

Mrs Lovia Adjei, Senior Physician Assistant, Mamobi Dental Clinic, educated the students on personal hygiene practices, behaviour change, and demonstrated to them how best to brush their teeth as well as wash their hands.

She advised parents to lead the campaign of promoting oral hygiene in their various homes amongst their kids.

Rotaract Club of Accra Ring Road Central is a youth group that brings together persons aged between 18-30 years to enhance the knowledge and skills that would assist them in personal development, address the physical and social needs of their communities and promote better relations through a framework of friendship and service.
