A patient detected with cholera at Nkoranza

A suspected case of cholera at the Nkoranza Saint Theresa’s Catholic Hospital has been confirmed at the Brong-Ahafo Regional Hospital Laboratory at Sunyani.

Mrs Winifred Tienaah, Nkoranza Municipal Director of Health Services, said this at the inauguration of the Nkoranza Municipal Public Health Emergency Management Committee at Nkoranza.

The committee is to ensure effective education campaign on the signs and symptoms of cholera, Ebola and other epidemics.

Mrs Tienaah said the patient, Mr Kwasi Effah, 26, from Pinihe in the Nkoranza North District arrived at Nkoranza from Accra on August 1.

The patient collapsed on board a taxi from Techiman to Nkoranza and began vomiting and was taken to the hospital.

Mrs Tienaah said a specimen taken on the patient was sent to the Sunyani Regional Hospital Laboratory where it was confirmed to be cholera.

Dr Christian Compson, Medical Officer at the Saint Theresa’s Hospital, said the Hospital had created an isolation ward for suspected patients with cholera or Ebola.

Buckets and carbolic soap has been placed at the Hospital to encourage visitors to wash their hands.

Mr Charles Kwasi Gyamfi, Municipal Assistant Disease Control Officer, has told the GNA that another case of cholera has been detected.

He said the patient, Mr Charles Effah 40, also from Pinihe, was on admission at the Saint Theresa’s Hospital.

Mr Gyamfi said a specimen taken on the patient and sent to the Brong Ahafo Regional Hospital at Sunyani, confirmed that Mr Effah, who recently returned from Nii Boyeman in Accra, had been diagnosed with cholera.
