Winneba government hospital records low maternal deaths

Winneba (C/R) Jan. 14, GNA -Maternal deaths recorded at Winneba Government Hospital reduced from 12 in 2010 to three in 2011, Mr Frempong Hayford, Administrator of the medical facility has said.

Speaking at the 2011 Annual Performance Review meeting of the Hospital in Winneba, Mr Hayford said still birth recorded at the facility also reduced from 114 in 2010 to 67 in 2011.

Hypertension cases at the Out Patient Department (OPD) also reduced from 2,503 in 2010 to 1,766 in 2011.

Mr Hayford said the achievement was due to measures the management of the hospital took, which included the health tips given to clients, especially pregnant women during Antenatal Clinic (ANC).

Others measures comprised the administration of anti-tetanus injections to expectant mothers, health education to the public on the importance of ANC, proper nutrition and the dangers of unsafe abortion.

He said Institutional Infants Death increased slightly from 17 in 2010 to 18 in 2011 while diabetes cases at the OPD increased from 971 in 2010 as compared to 1,242 in 2011.

Mr Hayford said HIV positive cases diagnosed also reduced from 160 in 2010 against 90 in 2011.

He stated that Malaria still continue to top the 10 cases at the OPD.

He said lack of ambulance and small size of the OPD as against the number of patients the hospital receives daily are some of the challenges facing the facility.
