The Ghana AIDS Commission is set to introduce a new range of thinner, more elastic condoms following complaints from users about the thickness and comfort of existing products.

The new condoms are expected to offer enhanced comfort and flexibility while encouraging more Ghanaians to use protection during sexual intercourse, particularly ahead of the festive season.

In an interview with JoyNews on November 5, 2026, the Director-General of the Ghana AIDS Commission, Dr Kharmacelle Prosper Akanbong, said feedback from users informed the decision to introduce the new products.

He explained that the Commission had taken previous complaints into consideration and made adjustments to improve the acceptability of the new condoms.

“We took into consideration the user complaints in our previous assessment and the new ones that are coming would satisfy most of the user complaints that we had in the previous strategic condoms strategy that we used,” he said.

Dr Akanbong said the new condoms had recorded good user acceptability, comparable to other commercially available ultra-thin condoms.

Addressing concerns about whether the thinner material could make the condoms more susceptible to tearing, he assured users that the products had sufficient elasticity and durability.

“There is good elasticity, there is good durability, and it has that lubrication to prolong a very long sexual intercourse duration,” he said.

He further explained that the improved elasticity would allow the condoms to accommodate different sizes while providing adequate coverage.

Touching on the distribution arrangements, Dr Akanbong said the Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) was expected to approve the first batch before the products were released to stakeholders and designated condom distribution centres.

He indicated that the condoms could become available for public use from Friday, November 6, or Monday, November 9, 2026, depending on the approval and release process.
