Residents of Koblimahagu in the Northern Region have secured improved access to healthcare following the inauguration of a new Community-Based Health Planning and Services (CHPS) compound expected to serve about 8,400 people.
The facility was inaugurated by German Ambassador Frederik Landshöft, GIZ Ghana Country Director Sandra Retzer, KfW Country Director Amelie Stanzel-Ferreira, and officials of the Tamale Metropolitan Assembly, bringing essential healthcare services closer to residents of the community.
According to a Facebook post by the German Embassy, the project was driven by the community itself, which identified better access to healthcare as a priority for local development.
“Not Germany. Not an international organization. The people of Koblimahagu themselves,” the post stated, emphasizing the role of residents in determining the development needs of their community.
The new facility is expected to make it easier for pregnant women to access antenatal care, enable children to receive vaccinations closer to home, and support the early detection of illnesses before they develop into medical emergencies.
The project was incorporated into the Tamale Metropolitan Assembly’s development plans after the community identified healthcare as a pressing need.
Through German Cooperation, GIZ Ghana supported efforts to strengthen participatory planning and local governance, while the German development bank KfW provided funding through Ghana’s District Assemblies Common Fund Responsiveness Factor Grant.
The inauguration forms part of a broader development partnership involving Ghana, Germany, and Switzerland, which has supported infrastructure projects across the country’s districts.
Since 2009, Germany has contributed approximately GH¢774 million to the program, making it the largest international contributor, according to the German Embassy’s statement.
The program has helped finance more than 11,200 infrastructure projects across all 261 districts in Ghana, in collaboration with the Ghanaian and Swiss governments.
The Koblimahagu CHPS compound is another example of how community-led planning, local government institutions, and development partners can work together to address basic infrastructure needs.
“The community spoke. The Assembly listened. Partners joined forces. And together, we delivered,” the German Embassy stated.
