A surgeon at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, Dr Kwadwo Adae, has cautioned that people with certain skin conditions and underlying health problems may face increased risks when undergoing cosmetic surgery.
Speaking in a recent interview on Raw with Roselyn, Dr Adae explained that some individuals, particularly those with conditions that affect wound healing, require careful assessment before surgery.
“There are some skin conditions. It might not be very common in there, when I say Negro, like the black, the black person. But some people have skin conditions where there is difficulty in healing,” he said.
He noted that common conditions such as diabetes, hypertension and heart disease can complicate surgical procedures, especially because many cosmetic surgeries require patients to undergo general anaesthesia.

“Most of them, whatever you need to be done, the majority of them, you have to go under,” Dr Adae explained, referring to general anaesthesia, where a patient is made to sleep during surgery.
He further explained that while some patients are able to breathe on their own under anaesthesia, others may require assisted breathing with a machine.
He therefore stressed the need to ensure that patients are medically fit before undergoing such procedures.
“And so, we need to make sure that you are well enough for all that to happen,” he indicated.
