Ghana is set to host the first African Union (AU) Extraordinary Health Summit on July 21 and 22, 2026, in Accra, bringing together African Heads of State and Government to adopt a fully costed continental roadmap aimed at ending AIDS and tuberculosis by 2030.

The two-day summit, officially titled the Extraordinary Session of the African Union Assembly on Ending AIDS by 2030 and Addressing Preventable Maternal Deaths, Communicable and Non-Communicable Diseases Endemic to the Continent, and Strengthening Health Systems by 2030, will also focus on reducing preventable maternal deaths, tackling communicable and non-communicable diseases and strengthening Africa's health systems over the next decade.

In a message ahead of the summit, President John Dramani Mahama described the event as a significant opportunity for Africa to deepen cooperation in addressing the continent's pressing health challenges.

"My fellow Africans, Ghana has always stood at the forefront of African unity, progress and the collective well-being of our people," the President said. "It will be my distinct honour to welcome you all to the beautiful city of Accra for the African Union Extraordinary Summit on Health, " he said.

President Mahama noted that African leaders would work together to accelerate decisive action to eliminate AIDS and tuberculosis, prevent maternal deaths, confront diseases that continue to affect communities across the continent and secure Africa's health future.

The summit will be held under the theme, "Advancing Justice, Equity and Universal Health Coverage."

Discussions will centre on strengthening local pharmaceutical manufacturing, expanding Africa's pharmaceutical industry, unlocking sustainable health financing and building resilient health systems that ensure no African is left behind.

Ahead of the summit, the Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, appealed to governments, development partners, the private sector, civil society organisations, health professionals and citizens across the continent to support the initiative.

"I call upon member states, partners, the private sector, civil society, health professionals and all Africans to join us in Accra as we forge a new continental compact for healthier communities and a more prosperous Africa," he said.
