Afriwave Telecom Ghana Limited has partnered with Smile4Ghana and the Mfantsipim Old Boys Association to provide free dental screening and treatment to residents of Cape Coast.
The week-long outreach was held at Cape Coast Jubilee Park from May 11 to May 16, 2026. Organisers said a total of 1,005 people were screened and treated during the exercise.
The initiative formed part of Afriwave Telecom’s corporate social responsibility activities, which focus on education, sanitation and health.
Smile4Ghana is a charity registered in the United Kingdom that promotes oral health and provides basic dental services free of charge, particularly in underserved communities in Ghana.
During the outreach, Smile4Ghana and the MOBA 82–84 Year Group honoured the late Francis Apiagyei Poku for his contributions to dentistry in Ghana and for his service as the longest-serving Ebusuapanyin of the Mfantsipim Old Boys Association.
Before his death, Dr Poku served in several roles in the public health sector, including as Senior Dental Surgeon at Ridge Hospital, now known as Greater Accra Regional Hospital.
He later established Poku Memorial Dental Clinic, which is regarded as one of the pioneering private dental practices in the country.
He was a member of several professional bodies, including the Ghana Medical Association, Ghana Dental Association, Society of Private Medical and Dental Practitioners and the Commonwealth Dental Association.
He also served as Acting Vice President of the Ghana Medical Association.
Receiving the recognition on behalf of the family, Ernest Poku said the family was honoured by the tribute and pledged to preserve Dr Poku’s legacy.
He announced that Poku Memorial Dental Clinic would support the Smile4Ghana outreach annually and encouraged dental professionals and students to emulate Dr Poku’s commitment to the profession.
