The Ministry of Health (MoH) has announced the opening of the recruitment portal, encouraging health professionals nationwide to apply for positions.

However, thousands of unemployed health professionals are frustrated because the Ministry of Health’s recruitment portal keeps displaying “no slots.”

The portal opened a week ago to recruit staff nationwide amid a backlog of over 100,000 jobless health workers, but since it went live on May 4, 2026, at 10 am daily, most applicants say they can’t get through.

Some couldn’t access or log in at all. Others who managed to sign in saw their details but were blocked at the regional level with the “no slots” message, even minutes after 10 am, graphic.com.gh verified.

The rollout was staggered as shown by the regional numbers from May 4-15: Upper East/West, Savannah/North East, Oti/Bono East, Western North/Ahafo, Volta/Northern, Central/Western, Bono/Ashanti, and Greater Accra/Eastern.

In a May 14 release, the ministry said the last recruitment was in 2020 for nurses, 2019 for pharmacists and allied health, and 2018 for physician assistants. Current clearance covers only about 8,000 staff.

Nurses and midwives got 6,500 slots, allied health 900, pharmacists/pharmacy technicians 250, and physician assistants 300. Those recruited in 2024 but not mechanised were prioritised.

"Allocations were based on staffing gaps submitted by GHS, CHAG, Ahmadiyya Health Services, and the Mental Health Authority," the ministry said.

It added that the new portal aims to improve transparency and will reopen when more clearance comes.

“The Ministry remains committed to creating recruitment opportunities for all categories of health professionals,” the statement read.
