More than 30 patients at the Tema General Hospital who had been medically discharged but remained stranded due to unpaid hospital bills have finally regained their freedom, thanks to the intervention of the Goodwave Foundation.
The humanitarian gesture saw the foundation settle outstanding medical bills for patients who had completed treatment but were unable to leave the hospital because of financial constraints.
For many beneficiaries, the support marked the end of weeks, and in some cases months, of distress and uncertainty.
Hospital authorities and relatives of the patients expressed relief and gratitude, noting that the situation of “medical detention” often places emotional and psychological strain on patients and their families, even after recovery.
The Goodwave Foundation said the initiative forms part of its broader commitment to improving access to healthcare and supporting vulnerable populations who fall through the cracks of the health financing system.
“Our focus is on restoring dignity and hope,” the foundation noted, emphasising that no patient should remain hospitalised solely because they cannot afford medical bills after being healed.

The intervention has renewed calls from health advocates for stronger social protection mechanisms and expanded health insurance coverage to prevent similar situations in public hospitals across the country.
Tema General Hospital management commended the foundation for its timely support, describing the gesture as a meaningful contribution to patient welfare and community health.
