Vice President commends health minister for milestones achieved

The Minister of Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, has outlined key achievements of the Ministry under his leadership.

He made this known during a historic visit by the Vice President, Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, to the Ministry, according to a statement issued on Wednesday, August 27, 2025.

Akandoh noted that, despite assuming office during outbreaks of cholera, meningitis, and mpox, strategic interventions were swiftly implemented to stabilize the situation, with particular emphasis on water and sanitation.

"Over 10,000 health professionals have been placed on the government payroll, with 7,000 already receiving their salaries. The Ministry has also uncapped the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), introduced innovative interventions such as the MahamaCare initiative, and strengthened primary healthcare to improve service delivery.



NHIS claims are now being paid promptly, with a debt of GH₵600 million fully cleared. Nursing trainees face reduced financial stress as fees have been cut by half, and all outstanding arrears for nurses have been cleared, with allowances now being paid on time," the statement noted.

The Vice President reaffirmed her commitment to the health sector and pledged to work closely with the Minister to further improve healthcare delivery.

"She commended the Minister for his dedication and achievements since assuming office and assured him of her continuous support," the statement added.

According to the statement, the visit was aimed at ensuring that the Ministry of Health thrives and continues to deliver on its mandate to strengthen the nation’s health system.
