The Dialysis Centre at the Sunyani Teaching Hospital has recorded 114 cases of kidney-related diseases this year, according to Pastor Jefferson Kwasi Agbotro, a health professional at the facility.

He noted that all the patients are currently undergoing dialysis, adding that in 2024 alone, 58 clients were also placed on dialysis at the hospital.

Pastor Agbotro, who is also the Chief Executive Officer of the Friends of Health Association (FOHA), a health-focused non-governmental organisation, expressed concern over the increasing prevalence of kidney-related diseases.

Speaking at a health forum organised by the Living Grace Ministry for some of its church leaders at Fiapre in the Sunyani West Municipality, he cautioned the public against the excessive intake of energy drinks.

He also advised the public to maintain a proper, balanced diet and avoid the use of unapproved herbal medicines, stressing that self-medication is dangerous.

Pastor Agbotro emphasized that the management and treatment of kidney diseases are expensive and urged everyone to take proactive steps to protect their health.

“There is no cure for kidney failure. However, with treatment, people with the condition can live longer and productive lives,” he stated.

He added that dialysis and kidney transplantation are the two treatment options available for people diagnosed with the condition.
