Upper East Health Directorate introduces Excellence Awards to boost staff morale

In a strategic move to enhance healthcare standards, the Upper East Regional Health Directorate of the Ghana Health Service (GHS) has officially instituted an Annual Performance Excellence Awards programme.

The initiative is designed to honour outstanding staff and facilities across every level of the regional healthcare system.

The new scheme was integrated into the Service’s broader Staff Welfare and Performance Management System with the core mission to incentivize health workers who demonstrate exceptional dedication and achieve measurable success in clinical outcomes and service delivery.

Mr Paschal Dongzuing, the Deputy Director of Administration, in a signed letter on behalf of Dr Braimah Baba Abubakari, the Regional Director of the Service, highlighted the vision behind the awards.

“The primary goal is to instil a sense of regional pride, patriotism, and professionalism among our health workers. We want to encourage them to continually strive for excellence in improving healthcare quality for the citizens of this region and beyond,” the statement said.

The awards ceremony is set to take place during the 2025 Annual Regional Performance Review meeting, scheduled for March 24–25, 2026 in Bolgatanga.

The letter noted that due to initial time constraints, the awards would focus exclusively on institutional and facility-level recognitions and expected to expand to individual categories in subsequent years.

Management of the Service called on all personnel to embrace the initiative, emphasizing that a motivated workforce was the backbone to achieving superior health outcomes.

The awards would foster a spirit of healthy competition, recognition, and further solidify the Region’s reputation for quality medical care.
