Tigo saves lives through a blood donation campaign

Tigo Ghana in partnership with Skyy multimedia conducted the largest ever blood donation exercise in the Western Region as part of its Corporate Social Responsibility agenda to support communities and improve lives.

A statement copied to the Ghana News Agency and signed by Grace Boateng of the company's Brands Communication on Friday said, over the last couple of years several pregnant women, children and accident patients had lost their lives as a result of inadequate blood supply in most of the nation’s health centres especially in the Western Region.

"The situation becomes more frightening when patients lose their lives due to numerous blood group mismatches in hospitals. It is in this vain situation that Tigo Ghana launched a project dubbed 2012 BLOOD DONATION CAMPAIGN to amass pints of blood to save lives."

The campaign brought together over 700 selfless patrons, who donated blood to the Western regional blood bank. Doctors and nurses from the regional blood bank, Afia-Nkwanta Hospital provided expertise and medical equipments for the blood donation exercise.

Donors also went through series of medical screening as a requirement to declare them fit to donate blood.

Tigo provided beverages, cash and souvenirs to show gratitude to donors and volunteers and also to encourage the community to patronize such noble and significant programs. 400 pints of blood were collected at the end of the exercise and this will be used to stock 12 hospitals in the Western Region.

Speaking in Takoradi, the Marketing coordinator for the western territory, Mr. James Nyarkoh, stated “Tigo is happy to partner the 2012 Blood Donation Campaign. This campaign is actually a call to duty by Tigo to help save lives. We (Tigo) say that, you can always express yourself when you save a life. We will continue to save lives, improve lives and support communities.’’

The western Regional health director, Dr Linda Van Otoo, commended Tigo and Skyy Multimedia for their supporting such a worthy course and appealed to Ghanaians to donate blood to health facilities regularly.

Kwesi Kyei, a donor thanked Tigo for encouraging him to donate blood to save lives.**
