Rotary supports Korle Bu Urology Department

Accra, May 2, GNA - The Airport Branch of Rotary Club, Ghana in collaboration with their Dutch counterparts on Friday presented Transducer equipment worth 12,000 Euros to the Urology Department of the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital to aid in the early detection of Prostate Cancer. Dr. James Edward Mensah, Consultant Urologist who received the equipment from Mrs Diana Beuker from Rotary District KG 1500 of Holland said the gesture had come at a time that the department needed it the most. He noted that the Transducer machine with an inbuilt device, 'Probe' was very expensive which could only be used in detecting prostate cancer at its early stage.

Dr. Mensah said about 50 percent of patients who reported at the hospital died of advanced prostate cancer due to the lack of such equipment to help in early detection. Mr. John Totoh, President of the Airport Rotary Club, Ghana said the club was committed to helping communities to improve the livelihood of the less privileged. He said the club recognized the urgent need for such equipment by the hospital to save lives.

The club also visited the Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Junior High School, Kpehe in Ayawaso Sub-Metro of Accra where they had renovated the school complex to the tune of 5000 Ghana cedis. Nii Okaija Dinsey, Accra Metro Director of Education said community participation in the development process had become imperative since government alone could not bear the cost and lauded the club for their contribution. He urged the authorities to help maintain the facility to win the trust of such organizations to support other needy ones.
