Report on controversial death at Tamale Teaching Hospital presented to minister

The three-member committee tasked with investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of a patient, Bavug Sali, at the Tamale Teaching Hospital (TTH), has presented its report to the Minister of Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh.

During the presentation, the committee chairman, Dr Abdul Ibrahim Mohammed, briefed the minister, stating that the committee conducted extensive engagements with various parties, including the patient’s family and friends, as well as the hospital staff.

“We held a total of about 12 sittings, meeting with the patient’s family, friends, and staff of the hospital, particularly those at the Accident and Emergency Department, along with other relevant staff,” a citinewsroom.com report on August 26, quoted the chairman as saying.

“Between May and June, we met with all of them. We also assessed the hospital’s protocols and Standard Operating Procedures,” he added.

The committee submitted its report to the health minister on Tuesday, August 26, 2025.

The health minister after receiving the report, noted that the matter is of public interest and assured that the committee’s recommendations would be duly implemented.

“This became an issue of public concern, but now that the committee has completed its work and presented the report, the people of this country should know that the report has been submitted,” he stated.

The minister also assured that the details of the committee’s report will be made public at the appropriate time in the interest of accountability within the health sector.

The three-member committee was established following allegations of negligence by hospital staff leading to the patient’s death and was mandated to complete its work within two weeks.
