NGO holds workshop for pregnant women at Amasaman

Madam Alice Asamany, Chief Executive Officer of Midwives for Women and Children Health, has called on nurses and midwives to eschew all forms of negative tendencies that bring the nursing profession into disrepute.

She said the situation where some nurses and midwives did not act professionally in the discharge of their duties when pregnant women were seeking medical care, do not augur well for the profession.

Madam Asamany made the call at the opening of a one-day workshop for pregnant women at Amasaman in the Ga West Municipality of the Greater Accra Region on Saturday.

The workshop organized by Midwives for Women and Children Health, a Non-Governmental Organization (NGO), was sponsored by African Women Development Fund.

It was aimed at exploring the opinions of pregnant women and also educating community members on pregnancy and its related complications.

Madam Asamany said some pregnant women feared to attend hospitals due to the attitudes of some nurses and midwives.

She appealed to the participants to desist from taking white clay which is popularly called “Ayelor’” which she said causes maternal death.

Madam Asamany urged the government to include some basic drugs in the list of the drugs covered by the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), indicating that the inclusion of drugs such as Hydralazine and Oxytocin which helped to prevent bleeding under the NHIS would help to reduce maternal deaths in the country.

She said so far the NGO had covered two communities in the Greater Accra Region and that more communities in the region would be covered and expressed the hope that it would be extended to other regions in the near future.
