On the 10th of May 2025, the Makola Clinic in Accra Central hosted a significant maternal mental health screening and education event, organised by the Mental Health Authority of Ghana with generous support from the World Health Organisation (WHO).
The initiative aimed to raise awareness, identify early signs of maternal mental health challenges, and provide essential education and support to women in the community.
The event commenced promptly at 8:00 AM and saw enthusiastic participation from both health professionals and the general public. A multidisciplinary team from the Mental Health Authority was present, including personnel from the Technical Division and the Communication Division.
The event also attracted coverage from various media houses, helping to amplify the message of maternal mental health awareness.
Collaboration was a key feature of the exercise. Five dedicated staff members from the Makola Clinic actively supported the Authority’s team in conducting the screening activities, ensuring a smooth and efficient process throughout the day. Their local knowledge and rapport with the community played a crucial role in encouraging participation and delivering personalised care.
Clients were screened during the event. Participants were taken through a structured process that included mental health assessments and one-on-one counselling sessions where needed. In addition to the screenings, the event placed strong emphasis on education.
All participants received detailed information about maternal mental health, including the signs and symptoms of common conditions such as postpartum depression, anxiety, and stress-related disorders.
They were also informed about available treatment options and support services within the health system.

The program concluded on a positive note, with participants expressing appreciation for the opportunity to learn more about mental health in a supportive and stigma-free environment.
The success of the event underscores the importance of integrating mental health education into routine maternal care and highlights the need for continued community outreach initiatives.
The Mental Health Authority, in collaboration with the WHO and local health institutions, remains committed to promoting mental well-being among mothers and ensuring that mental health services are accessible and responsive to the needs of the population.
