Medical association cries for single spine salary

The National Executive Council of the Ghana Medical Association(GMA), has expressed
deep concern about the undue delay in moving the health sector onto the Single Spine
Salary Structure and the silence of the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission on
payment of arrears.
The association said this in a press statement at the end of the 3rd National
Exedcutive Council meeting of the GMA in Sunyani, signed by its president, Dr.
Emmanuel Adom Winful and Secretary, Dr. Frank Serebour respectively.
The asociation said as much as it believes that the single spine policy seeks to to
bring equity and fairness in the public sector pay structure, it would not look on
unconcerned if the fundamental policy of the process is undermined.
The GMA therefore called on the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission to strictly
stick to the job revaluation results in the health sector, since the GMA will not be
in a position to accept any unreasonable changes in the levels to the detriment of
its members.
“Any attempt to change the figures would push the GMA to eject the entire single
spine pay policy which would invariably disturb the harmony in the country as a
whole”, the satement said.
Meanwhile, the GMA has called on the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission to as a
matter of urgency sit with the GMA to discuss salary review for doctors immediately.
This is because salaries for the health sector have not seen any review since 2009.
The GMA said the review has become necessary because there is no clear timeline as
to when the health sector is coming on board the single spine salary structure.
