MTN Foundation donates to Korle-Bu Maternity Block

About 60 percent of maternal and neonatal deaths are caused by hypertension and infections during and after labour due to inadequate equipment in health centres.

Dr Samuel Amenyi Obed, Head of Obstetrics and Gynaecology Department at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital, made this known when the MTN Foundation donated medical equipment to the maternity block of the Hospital.

The equipment included eight mobile examination lamps, radiant warmers, twelve instrument trolleys, six multi-function delivery beds and suction machines.

Dr Amenyi Obed expressed his gratitude to the MTN Foundation for the continuous support to the block since 2009, and gave the assurance the equipment would be maintained.

Mr Robert Kuzoe, Secretary of the MTN Foundation, said the total cost of the equipment was GH?129,500.00, adding that the donation was part of the Foundation’s eighth anniversary celebration.

Mr Kuzoe said apart from improved maternal and newborn health care, the equipment would enhance the work of the doctors, midwives and nurses at the facility, and ultimately contribute to the achievements of the Sustainable Development Goals.

He said since the establishment of the Foundation eight years ago, MTN has invested over 21.5 million cedis in 102 community development projects in the areas of health, education, and economic empowerment.

“MTN has invested in over 32 major health projects which include the construction and refurbishment of hospital wards, CHPS Compounds and support for special medical conditions,” he added.

He called for partnership to improve the well-being of Ghanaians.
