Lordina Foundation donates medical items to 2 Polyclinics

Mrs Lordina Mahama, the First Lady said she recognizes the importance of health institutions to the social and economic well being of the people of Ghana as it contributes significantly towards the health needs of the people.

She noted that the local economy could not grow if the people are not healthy, and that, it was critical that health facilities that serve the people must be assisted to provide quality health care.

Mrs Mahama said this when she presented medical items to the Ussher Clinic in the Asheidu keteke Sub-Metro, in the Odododiodio Constituency, and the Mamprobi Polyclinic in the Ablekuma South Metro of the Ablekuma South Constituency, in the Greater Accra Region.

The items were donated to the Lordina Foundation by MedShare, a non-Governmental Organization in the United States of America.

She said the presentation is aimed at supporting Government efforts to attain its vision of universal health care.

Mrs Mahama said the government, led by President John Dramani Mahama, is increasing access to healthcare by expanding health facilities and retooling all regional and district hospitals and health centers and also building chip compounds across the country.

She said the citizenry, as a major stakeholder, has a major role to play in achieving quality healthcare for all and urged them to take up the sanitation of their environment in order to prevent the outbreak of diseases, which puts pressure on the hospitals and health centers.

Mrs Mahama said the outbreak of cholera last year, which led to the death of over 100 people was unacceptable, and that, this requires the citizenry to maintain a clean surrounding and a decent level of hygiene.

She thanked MedShare of the United States of America for making it possible for the Lordina Foundation to donate the items to the health facilities.

Mr Edwin Nii Lantey Vanderpuiye, a Deputy Minister of Local Government and Rural Development said Government is committed to improving the health status of the citizenry to ensure development.

Mr Vanderpuiye who is also the Member of Parliament (MP) for Odododiodio, urged the citizenry to stop the indiscriminate disposal of waste to prevent the outbreak of diseases such as cholera.

Mr Fritz Baffour, MP for Ablekuma South said government, together with the Accra Metropolitan Assembly, will construct a theater for the Mamprobi Polyclinic to enable it to perform minor operation.

He expressed appreciation to the First Lady for the gesture and appealed to other organisations to support the country's health facilities.

Dr Stella Gyamfi, the Specialist in-charge of the Ussher Clinic said the hospital serves over 120,000 people, who are mostly fishermen and women and residents of Sodom and Gomorrah, a slum area in Accra.

She said the hospital was established in 1963 and the vision and mission of the hospital is in line with the Ghana Health Service and thanked the First Lady for the gesture.

The Lordina Foundation aims at raising awareness and funds to improve the infrastructure of Orphanages in deprived communities in Ghana.

The target is to put smiles on the faces of children, calm their souls and ensure a sense of security.

The objectives is to support Orphanages, women and youth empowerment, provide vocational skills to the youth, grant scholarship to brilliant but needy and under privileged children to further their education, as well as, give charity to the poor and the needy and assist people in all walks of life, irrespective of race, colour or tribe.
