The management of the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital has proposed increasing its patient levy from GH¢2 to GH¢5 to support the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the Children’s Ward.
Hospital authorities explained that the adjustment has become necessary because about 64 percent of patients admitted to the ward’s ICU are unable to pay for services, which are not covered by the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS).
According to a report by citinewsroom.com, the Chief Executive Officer of the hospital, Dr Yakubu Seidu Adam, announced the proposal during a visit by the Health Committee of Parliament on Wednesday, September 3, 2025.
“We’re making a case to engage NHIS. We’re also proposing that we increase the levy from GH¢2 to GH¢5 for patients who come to Korle-Bu. Just a small levy,” Dr Adam said.

He noted that the hospital continues to struggle with outstanding bills, adding that many patients rely on the social welfare unit for assistance.
“Sixty-four percent of the bill is outstanding. The social welfare unit keeps them, because you cannot keep them here; if you do, you have to feed them. Here, there’s no NHIS,” he explained.
