Herbalists must use good methods to harvest herbs – practitioner

The Chairman of the West Akyem Municipal Traditional Herbalists Association, Anthony Normeshie, has advised herbalists to employ good methods in harvesting medicinal plants.

He said when good practices are adopted, they would not only conserve the medicinal potency of the plants, but would also protect the forests from depletion.

The chairman, who is also founder of the Health for All Clinic at Oworam, gave the advice at a meeting with herbal practitioners at Oworam near Asamankese.

He said the indiscriminate harvesting of the medicinal plant had resulted in the loss of some plants or their curative potencies.

The herbal practitioner urged his compatriots to regularly submit their monthly reports to the Municipal Directorate and refer cases that they found complex to the nearest orthodox clinics and hospitals.

He asked them to progress from the traditional forms of preparation of the herbal medicine and adopt standard methods that are internationally recognized and acceptable.**
