Ghana’s Minister of Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, on Wednesday September 24, 2025, joined world leaders and policymakers at a high-level roundtable on health taxes, convened to discuss strategies for tackling non-communicable diseases and promoting sustainable health financing.
The roundtable was hosted by Michael Bloomberg, Global Ambassador for Noncommunicable Diseases and Injuries of the World Health Organization (WHO), Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Director-General of WHO, Prime Minister Mia Mottley of Barbados and Helen Clark, former Prime Minister of New Zealand.

The dialogue brought together health ministers, global health advocates and financial experts to explore the role of health taxes.
The event highlighted the increasing recognition of health taxes as a dual policy tool, addressing urgent health risks while providing much-needed resources for governments to invest in health infrastructure, universal health coverage and social protection measures.
By engaging in this global conversation, Ghana positions itself among countries championing innovative approaches to public health financing and preventive health policy.
