GPHA Hospital gets haematology Analyser

The German Development Corporation (GIZ) together with their project partner, Sysmex has donated a Sysmex XN Haematology Analyser worth 100,000 euros to the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority hospital as part of their prevention is better than cure project.

The state-of-the-art equipment is expected to enhance the capacity of laboratory testing at GPHA’s main clinic and therefore improve the implementation of prevention and health promotion services at the facility.
The XN Haematology Analyser which can perform 1000 lab tests within an hour can be used to check anemia and diagnose other blood related diseases.
The ‘Prevention is Better than Cure’ project is implemented in cooperation with Ghana Association of Quasi Health Institutions (GAQHI), of which the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority Hospital is a founding member.

The project has an objective to integrate prevention and health promoting measures in the service packages of both public and private health service providers including health insurance providers in Ghana.

The preventive health package will complement the curative services being offered currently by health care and insurance providers. This will improve care provision and address the health and social protection needs of staff of partnering companies, their families and the general population as a whole.

GPHA Hospital was the only institution selected amongst 26 other GAQHI Institutions as the beneficiary of this donation because of efforts put in place by its management to improve healthcare delivery.

The Head of medical services at the GPHA, Dr. Vitus Anaab-Bisi commended GIZ for the gesture and added that it will go a long way to enhance healthcare delivery at the GPHA main clinic.

He said the donation reaffirms the trust GIZ has in the port authority to deliver quality healthcare to its staff and beneficiaries.

“Sysmex and GIZ decided that they will give us this donation because they trust in our system. They see that we are well positioned to put this equipment to good use. It means that you are preempting things, you don’t wait for somebody to go into crises, to say the hemoglobin level is too low before you transfuse the person, if you monitor well, that means that you can intervene and you can save lives with this,” he said.

The Regional Manager for Sysmex, Eric Osei who donated the items revealed that additional trainings will be provided for staff in the laboratory.

“We are aware of the current projects being undertaking by GHAPOHA with the opening of the soon new facility and the kind of equipment we have over there and we think that this is one of the world’s leading haematology analysers that should be at a place like GHAPOHA hospital,” he said.
