The Minister of Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh has announced that the government has disbursed over GH¢1.38 billion to healthcare providers in the first half of 2025.
Speaking during the second edition of the Government Accountability Series on Friday, July 18, 2025, he described the move as part of broader efforts to strengthen the scheme's funding and ensure timely support for service providers.
He further announced that the government had cleared GH¢ 603 million in outstanding claims owed to service providers.
"I'm proud to announce a total of GH¢603 million as of December 2024, have been fully settled. This milestone demonstrates our commitment, government's steadfast dedication to timely payments and fulfilling our obligations to healthcare providers.
"In the first half of the 2025 alone, The National Health Insurance Authority disbursed over GH¢1.38 billion to providers reflecting a system that is stronger, more responsive and more reliable than ever before," he stated.
He also outlined key interventions that have improved the Scheme's effectiveness.
"We have increased allocations for claims payments from 56.2% in 2024 to 65% in 2025, and plan to increase to 75% by 2026. As the fund grows, we ensure that every cedi reaches frontline services, providing quality care to all Ghanaians. Not only have we uncapped the levy, but we have also been committed to releasing funds swiftly", the health minister stated.
Mintah Akandoh further reaffirmed the government's commitment to improving the NHIS.
"This turnaround demonstrates that we are developing a health insurance scheme that benefits all Ghanaians. Today 15.65 million Ghanaians are enrolled in the National Health Insurance Scheme, an increase of about 670,000 from last year's own. What this means is that 670,000 more Ghanaians are now benefiting from health insurance coverage," he stated.
