Eye screening for four communities in Ashanti

Mama Ellen Foundation, a non-governmental organization (NGO), organized free eye screening for people in Jacobu, Obuasi, Kunatanse and Bompata-Kumasi, in the Ashanti region.

Mrs Ellen Adutwumwaa Semanyo, Chief Executive Officer of the Foundation, said out of 399 people examined by a team of medical professionals, 372 of them either had glaucoma, cataract or reflective error.

She said the NGO was supported by the Ghana Health Service to undertake the exercise that formed part of activities marking this year’s Glaucoma Week Celebration.

Mrs. Semanyo explained that glaucoma, an eye disease, which the optic nerve is damaged in a characteristic pattern, could lead to permanent blindness if untreated.

He urged the people to go for regular eye check for early detection and treatment of all forms of diseases and correction of defects.

Mrs Semanyo said the NGO would work with the Ghana Education Service and extend the exercise to basic schools.
