Ebola: Korle Bu denies 'sacking' staff for visiting Liberia

The Korle Bu Teaching Hospital has denied sending home two staff who travelled to Liberia because of the Ebola outbreak.

A statement issued by the hospital said the two Central Laboratory staff were put under self-quarantine upon their return from Liberia as a standard practice.

The two, travelled to Liberia to moderate a workshop on the proper use and handling of personal protective equipment (PPE).

According to the statement, “it is standard requirement that is observed internationally that those who travel to an Ebola affected area to treat patients or train caregivers must submit to self-quarantine.

“It was to meet this requirement that they took their annual leave to enable them observe the self-quarantine for 21-days".

It added that the “observation period elapsed on 28th September 2014 and the two are doing well. We wish to assure the general public that they do not pose a risk of infection to us, their families and the society as a whole”.

The haemorrhagic fever has killed over 3,000 people in West Africa with Liberia being the hardest hit country.
