Christian Medical professionals urged to maintain integrity

Accra, Aug. 3, GNA- Dr. Irene Agyepong-Amartefio, Greater Accra Regional Director of Health Services on Friday urged Christian medical professionals to swim against the tide and hold on to the integrity of the profession.

She explained that the profession was full of unethical practices that went against the will of God adding; "as Christians, we should hold consistently to the will of God for his blessings and whatever we need, he will provide abundantly in his own time". Dr. Agyepong-Amartefio said this when she opened the seventh annual conference of the Ghana Christian Medical and Dental Fellowship (GCMDF) in Accra.

The conference under the theme: "Maintaining Our Integrity as Christian Doctors and Dentists" also has a sub theme; "Healing the doctor and his/her family".

The GCMDF is a group of fellowships made up of Christian medical doctors and dentists with the aim of sharing knowledge, experience, and bringing Christian faith to bear on their work as doctors. They also aimed at providing forum for discussion of ethical moral and spiritual issues affecting the medical and dental profession and practice, offer medical and services as well as medical missionaries to the needy and the poor in communities and spread the gospel with particular focus on persons studying and working in the health and related institutions as well as patients.

The conference will be treating topics such as; "Stem Cell Research-Current Situation, Scientific Attempts to Create Life in the Laboratory, Maintaining our Integrity; The Christian and his Relationships, Ethics, Medical Ethics and Christian Ethics and a debate on; "To strike or not to Strike".

Dr. Agyepong-Amartefio said doctors faced challenges such as corruption in the consulting room and issues such as embarking on strike actions and urged them to change their attitude towards work, be more committed to their work since their service to God was service to the ethics of their work.

"We should change our attitude towards money and seek Godly counselling, pray without ceasing, stay connected to the Lord for his true blessings and stay in fellowship."

Dr. Pius Agbenorku, national president of the Fellowship said there was the need for their call as Christians and healthcare providers, be maintained to help proclaim the Lord's Kingdom to the world. He said there was the urgent need to bringing together all Christian doctors in the medical and dental field to pool their resources to fulfill their individual and joint obligation, under the great commission.

Dr. Sam Adjei, deputy Director-General of the Ghana Health Service who presided, reminded members of GCMDF that integrity was value that should be protected and urged them to let their Christian morals reflect in the discharge of their duties as medical professionals who cared for the sick. 03 Aug. 07
