Amansie East registers 177,253 for NHIS

Bekwai (Ash), Sept. 9, GNA - About 177,253 people in the Amansie East district have, as at June this year, registered with the District Mutual Health Insurance Scheme (DMHIS).

Twenty six thousand out of the number have been issued with identity (ID) cards to access benefits of the scheme.

Mr Richard Aboagye, District Chief Executive, who made these known said 1.257 billion cedis had so far been paid as claims for the beneficiaries.

He was speaking at the last meeting of the assembly at Bekwai on Thursday.

Mr Aboagye said the National Health Insurance Council had released 2.198 billion cedis to the district mutual scheme for its activities. He said the school enrolment in the district increased from 34,658 in 2005 to 42,467 in 2006 as a result of the introduction of the capitation grant.

The DCE said the assembly had constructed 238 boreholes, which was the highest number in the Ashanti region, adding that, 15 of the boreholes had been mechanised to provide potable water to the people. He said the assembly had rehabilitated a number of schools and health infrastructure, police stations, court buildings and other public infrastructure as part of its efforts to promote maintenance culture in the district.

Mr Aboagye said a number of road networks were also rehabilitated in the district.

He thanked the outgoing members of the assembly for their cooperation and support, which ensured the smooth initiation and implementation of the development projects in the district.

Nana Minta Afari Bowak, Presiding Member of the assembly, announced that, the contractor, who rehabilitated the Aboabo, Dotom, Edwinase, Subriso, Ntraku, Asokore, Gyasikrom and Koniyaw roads, had been directed by the assembly to undertake the projects again. This is as a result of the shoddy works exhibited on the roads. He said the order to rehabilitate the roads again had become necessary due to the huge sum of money involved. Nana Bowak thanked members of the assembly for their support during his tenure of office.
