Perhaps it's Prof. Aryeetey's PhD that endow him with the "common sense" of self-criticism, which, judging from your own writing, is not common at all!

I wish to commend you for the article you posted on the above subject. My brother common sense really they say isent common, for how long shall we learn to be confident in what we think and do than rely on other peoples achievements. My heart often bleeds when i come in contact with people of a certain status who have never come across the word change.Believe in yourself and posterity will judge everyone at the end.I have seen someone with a post graduate degree who ended up collecting fees at a public place of convenience till he passed on.Please stay focus and GOD be with you.

The pinnacle of education is attaining the phd, and if that is the case, then the process of cognition must take place after attaining the phd otherwise it would be an exercise in futility. I know few people who spent between six to ten years in phd programs instead of four, yet they all come out as educated people. Not that anything is wrong with that, but how would you feel if you were told your doctor was last in his/her class. Would that prevent you from seeing him/her?
Prof. Ayitey's comment is rather unfortunate and ostensibly an aberration to him as a phd and an educator as well, because education is the process of acquiring cognition, and cognition includes common sense - you can't separate common sense from education, and if phd. is the pinnacle of education, and phds are bereft of common sense the Prof. Ayitey, an educator, should take the blame.

As far as am concerned none of the people who invented great things that changed the world had Ph.D. They are.. Alexander Fleming, Graham Bell, Logie Baird, Nicola Tesla, Thomas Edison,William Murdoch/Francis Trevithick,The Wright Brothers, Bill Gates and our own Bright Simmons. What is the point of Okoampa Ahoofe writing a million word thesis on "Atunpam" talking drum and being awarded a Ph.D? No wonder he is devoid of plain common sense.

I am suspicious of people who declare things they do not have as unimportant. To qualify as a sincere critic of an accolade, one must first possess the accolade, and thereafter, pronounce on its value.
How can one know the value of anything he has never acquired or possessed?

PhD is not Common to all those who sometimes exhibit Common Sense. Common Sense is basically defined as "good sense and sound judgment in practical matters"". Whoever has his brains intact has the right to tap into it and make good use of it for the purposes of sound and good judgement. That is the more reason why some practical buffoons on this forum can sometimes make good observations and sound judgements. In a sense, and to paraphrase the law of Zimmerman, one can say that " common sense [ are] not, [they] become".
On the other hand I disagree with all those who would want to choose Common Sense over PhD, a feet which takes a lot of Common Sense to achieve.
There is a lot of pedigree, connections or commonalities between 'common sense' and acquiring knowledge through higher formal education. People without formal education but seem to exhibit lots of Common Sense usually broadened their horizon when they acquired some sort of formal education.Common sense is the lesser to a Phd. I don't need to prove this to any one since it takes Common Sense to know that. This means that there is a limit as to how one apply common sense. What, say Dr. SAS, a brilliant lawyer distortion of laws, see as brilliant will be seen as stupid by, say , propagandist Koku Anyidoho or Kofi Adams. There is a cap or limit for these two NDC fellow, as far as the application of common sense is concerned.
Every PhD holder is trained to be a critical thinker. Common and Critical are the two key words to look into if one want to wade into this very arguement in contention. Not Everybody with Common sense can acquire a PhD. It can also be stated here that not everybody can be a critical thinker. Respect PhD if you cannot get it.
That is my 2-cents.
