President Barack Obama in his speech in Kenya said “politics that’s based solely on tribe and ethnicity is a politics that’s doomed to tear a country apart”. Sixty years after gaining independence, there are still regions in Ghana that are “guaranteed” to elect a 100% of their parliamentarians from one party. For Ghana to progress, we must put an end to tribalism in our politics, “a failure of the imagination” as described by Barak Obama during his speech in Nairobi.
In America the cradle of democracy, “autocratic” laws have been passed to help accelerate or force change. They called it “Affirmative Action”. To fast track this desperately needed check in Ghana´s electoral process, Ghana´s parliament must also enact a law into the constitution, or perhaps a referendum must be held, for all Ghanaians, to decide how we excise this cancer from our politics.
Ghana desperately requires an “Affirmative Action” act, a law that reduces the voting rights in parliament, of any region that votes a 100% of its parliamentarians for any one party, to a percentage equal to the national average of the largest party. Similarly votes in a presidential election over say 90% in any region for one candidate, indicating perhaps a tribal bias, can also be capped to a calculated national average.
These laws might not be “democratic”, but a country split across tribal lines, is a ticking bomb waiting to explode. We have to learn from history, we have to reach beyond the tribal divide, Ghana´s politics must not be defined by the divisions of our tribes, we must choose a better future, in a stable, united country, with a thriving economy.

What I take away from the Ms Mould Iddrisu statement is a positive message I wish was said enough to and about every tribe in Ghana. She is aware and have known the high standards of the Ashanti people; she is one and ought to know. But of late she has seen some people behave and engage in things that are not core values of the Ashanti people and yes if any of the critics had any respect and understanding of the effects of some of the shameful events taking place in the Ashanti region they would be full of shame. If you, Justice Sarpong, have any added value to the discussion you would know she is right but then it takes one educated but ignorant one to find another.
