Professor Elsie Effah Kaufmann has challenged societal expectations placed on women to get married, stating that marriage should not be considered a requirement for every woman.
Speaking in an interview with Berla Mundi on TV3 on August 13, 2026, the renowned Quiz mistress of the National Science & Maths Quiz said women should be allowed to make personal decisions about marriage based on what gives them fulfilment.
“It’s not necessary for every woman to be a wife. Society will always breathe down your neck even when you choose to be a wife or not,” she said.
Professor Elsie stressed that women should prioritise personal fulfilment rather than make major life decisions simply to satisfy societal expectations.
She urged women to reflect on their individual circumstances and make choices they are genuinely comfortable with.
“At the end of the day, what is most important is to reflect on your own life as a woman and decide that you have made the choices that you’re comfortable with,” she stated.
According to her, women should take ownership of their decisions instead of allowing pressure from family, friends, or society to dictate how they live their lives.
“You have to make choices that represent you and put your best that you’ve made and owning those choices, not because you were forced or trying to please someone else,” she shared.
Prof Elsie also noted that regardless of the choices an individual makes, there will always be people who disagree or criticise them.
She therefore encouraged women to prioritise peace of mind and personal fulfilment rather than constantly seeking approval from others.
“Regardless of what you do, there are people who are not going to be happy, so you might as well be at peace with yourself so that you can contribute your most,” she added.
