KMA against digging of trenches across streets

Kumasi, Aug. 12, GNA - The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA), is adopting a number of measures to curtail the indiscriminate digging of trenches across streets in the metropolis.

Consequently, in addition to an official permission from the Department of Urban Roads, a special permit signed by the Metropolitan Chief Executive, would have to be acquired by any person or company before a trench could be dug across a street.

Mr Maxwell Kofi Jumah, Metropolitan Chief Executive said this at a meeting with the assembly's Sub-Committee Conveners, Sub-Metro and Town Council chairmen in Kumasi.

He said henceforth, such a permit would only be issued on condition that the applicant can give a firm proof of his readiness to reseal such trenches with the required materials within 48 hours.

The Metro Chief Executive's comments followed complaints by the chairmen of the Sub-Committee, Sub-Metro and Town Councils over the indiscriminate digging of trenches across streets in Kumasi. Mr Jumah appealed to members of the assembly and town councils to ensure that nobody was allowed to dig a trench across any streets in their areas if such a person did not have a written permission from the Urban Roads as well as his office.

It was agreed at the meeting to speed up the rate of the assembly's streetlights repair programme, and that the Sub-Metros together with the town councils could engage private electrical contractors to do the repairs for them.
