The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has suspended party communicator Daniel Nortey from all media appearances and public engagements on behalf of the party following his remarks about the sexual abuse allegations involving the headmaster of Obuasi Senior High Technical School (SHTS).
The suspension takes immediate effect and will remain in force until further notice, according to a statement issued by the party’s National Communication Bureau on Thursday, October 22, 2026.
Obuasi SHTS Saga: What the NDC communicator said that has sparked outrage
The decision follows comments made by Nortey during a televised discussion on the allegations against the suspended headmaster, Zakaria Abdulai.
In the statement, the NDC said it had “noted with serious concern and distaste the remarks made by Daniel Nortey” during the discussion.
The party reaffirmed its zero-tolerance stance on sexual abuse and all forms of sexual exploitation, particularly where the safety and welfare of children are concerned.
“We condemn remarks that trivialise such allegations or undermine the seriousness with which they must be treated,” the statement said.
The NDC also acknowledged an apology from Nortey over his comments but stressed that public discussions involving such sensitive matters must be handled responsibly.
“The Party acknowledges this apology but emphasises the importance of responsible public commentary,” it added.
The NDC further stated that discussions concerning alleged sexual abuse must be guided by sensitivity, respect for due process and the need to protect children.
“Such matters must not be treated lightly or reduced to partisan debate,” the statement noted.
The party said its decision to suspend Nortey from media appearances was intended to reinforce its position on accountability and responsible communication.
It also reiterated its commitment to protecting women and children and ensuring that allegations of sexual abuse are handled in accordance with the law.
The controversy surrounding Obuasi SHTS gained national attention following an investigative report by JoyNews Investigative Correspondent Manasseh Azure Awuni, which featured allegations of sexual misconduct against Abdulai.
The suspended headmaster has denied the allegations and says he has been cautioned by the police and granted self-recognisance bail.
