Vice President Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang has described early presidential ambitions among some officials of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) as “a betrayal of the cause of the people.”

According to her, Ghanaians elected the NDC to address the country’s challenges, not for party members to begin positioning themselves for the next presidential race.

Speaking in an interview with KSM on August 7, 2026, monitored by GhanaWeb, Professor Opoku-Agyemang said the chances of any NDC official aspiring to lead the party in the future would depend largely on the performance of President John Dramani Mahama’s administration.

“They voted for us for a reason. They voted massively, and we remain grateful. They didn't vote for us today to be talking about going or not going. They said we should come and solve the problems. We have an agenda. What we inherited was a very, very tough situation. We have work to do,” she said.

She added that the prospects of any NDC official with presidential ambitions would depend on how Ghanaians assess the government’s performance.

“Whether we are going or coming depends on the work we are doing. It depends on the support we are giving our president, who is leading the charge, and it depends on the quality of support we are giving,” she stated.

The Vice President said it was too early for members of the party to focus on the next presidential race when the government’s priority should be delivering on its promises to Ghanaians.

“And if you're already going left and right and center and back, and it's not even time, I think it's a betrayal of the cause of the people. And I don't think it is right. So please help us to fulfil the dreams of this beautiful country that we know can do much better, even than it is doing now.

“Let us focus on getting the job done and I think that, speaking for myself, that is what I want to do. Keep the focus, build a nation, deliver results,” she added.
