The campaign team of Ashanti Regional New Patriotic Party (NPP) Chairman Bernard Antwi Boasiako, Chairman Wontumi, has said he remains in the race for the party's national chairmanship despite his 20-year prison sentence.

Dr Palgrave Boakye-Danquah, spokesperson for Wontumi's campaign, told TV3 on August 6, 2026, that there has been no change to the Ashanti Regional Chairman's ambition to lead the party.

He disclosed that Wontumi's last instruction to the campaign team before he was sentenced was to continue working towards both his national chairmanship bid and the NPP's electoral success.

"We still, as a campaign, are very committed to Chairman Wontumi's ambition to become the national chairman of the party. We have no indication otherwise as well.

"His last words to me on the day that he was sentenced on July 20, 2026, were that we should work hard to be able to bring Dr Mahamudu Bawumia to power and that we should also work hard to make him the national chairman of the party and that he's gonna be okay," he said.

Dr Boakye-Danquah added that the campaign team intends to file Wontumi's nomination when the party opens nominations and leave the final decision to delegates.

"So I'm very confident that when the party opens up nominations, we will be able to pick up the form for him. When the party is closing nominations, we'll be able to file for him and it's the decision of the delegates to make a decision from there whether or not they would want Chairman Wontumi to lead the party.

"But we are very confident as a campaign and even as a spokesperson that we are going to still stand for the national chairmanship election," he stated.

Wontumi asks court to order his release pending his appeal judgement

Meanwhile, Chairman Wontumi has filed an application asking the High Court in Accra to order his release pending the judgment of the bail appeal he has filed.
