Titus Sardines, shrimp balls recalled in Canada

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency is warning consumers not to eat Titus sardines in vegetable oil or Homey shrimp balls and seafood dumpling. The sardines may become contaminated because the cans are improperly sealed, the agency said.

The affected product, packed by UNIMER of Casablanca, Morocco, is imported and sold by Mosaic Wholesalers at 54 Eddystone Avenue in Toronto.

The Homey products may contain chloramphenical, an antibiotic not permitted for use in food-producing animals in Canada. It poses a risk of a serious blood disorder known as aplastic anemia, although the risk is small.

The products imported from China, are sold frozen by Jia He International Ltd. of Toronto.

No illnesses have been reported, said Davendra Sharma, an agency official. Retailers are advised not to sell the products. Mosaic Wholesalers and Jia He International are voluntarily recalling them. For more information, call the CFIA at 1-800-442-2342 or visit www.inspection.gc.ca.
