KILOMBO 2013 Conference on Africa, Africans and Social Justice*



The Kilombo Centre for Citizens' Rights and Conflict Resolution, Peki,
Ghana is organizing the 2nd Kilombo Conference on Africa, Africans and
social Justice. The conference will take place in Peki, Ghana from the
Friday 27/09/2013 to Sunday 29/09/2013 and is aimed at bringing together a
large and representative gathering of Africans and people of African
descent to discuss issues bothering on Africa, Africans and social
Justice. Kilombo hopes among other things, to raise a core of dedicated
Africans who will be adequately armed through a series of well tailored
activities which will awaken and or strengthen their consciousness about
the continent of Africa and the need for us all together as African,
regardless of location, protect through the building of a truly liberated
continent.



Invited Speakers to this year’s conference include, Wangui Munyi-Vanselow

Kilombo is a word that comes from the Kimbundu language of the Angolan
people. We chose this word because as Pan-Africanist, we looked for a word
that comes from an indigenous African language and is a word for
resistance. This word means launching pad for battle or settlement
(fortress) of resistance.

Kilombo (www.kilomboeducation.org) is an education and research project,
which aims at facilitating the process of building institutions to provide
capacity for grass root and pro-people forces to develop an alternative to
the unfair social and economic arrangement globally and secure a just
relationship between Africa and Africans with the rest of the world. Our
concept is, therefore, to approach our work as part of the global justice
movement and not see Africa and Africans as an isolated group which can
miraculously or mysteriously achieve justice without linking and working
with other people. Within Africa, as well, we relate with all the
activities that take place today and see how we can influence them towards
this goal and not operate or approach what we do in abstract.

We have been developing the Kilombo Centre for Citizens’ Right and Conflict
resolution (formerly Kilombo Centre for Civil Society and African
Self-Determination) since 2003, as a coordinating centre for our activities
globally with a centre office, community library and a training centre in
Peki, Ghana. This approach is also to be innovative in having a centre of
that type in Africa which not capital city centred and relates to the
society at the grass roots. The centre is run by a Director who is Explo
Nani-Kofi with the help of a volunteers/supporters.

The centre maintains contacts with a number of campaigns and community
based organizations. Through these community based organizations and
campaigns the project carries out public activities. As the centre does not
have any organized funding or support from funders yet, and operates as an
activist backed project so far, we take advantage of activities by various
campaigns such as peace, anti-war, anti-austerity, anti-globalisation,
women’s interest, youth affairs, climate change, tax justice, African
self-determination, African unity, anti-racist etc and participate in them
to network with others.
