Warning to Ghanaians in Ethiopia

Ethiopia government bans VoIP services

The Ethiopia Government has ratified a new law that bans the use of all VOIP services including Skype, Viber, Paltalk, Google Voice and Yahoo Messenger. Under the new Telecom Crime Controlling Prevention Proclamation law, the use of any VOIP service attracts a jail term while the provision and use of any Internet calling service will carry a jail term of up to 15 years. The new law is aimed at protecting the country’s national security as well as protecting Ethio Telecom from unnecessary revenue loss from international calls. The state-owned telecom operator is estimated to be losing about 83% of revenue from its international call business due to illegal operations by service providers.
