Residents of Croydon in the United Kingdom joined Ghana’s global independence celebrations with a dignified flag-raising ceremony to commemorate the country’s 69th Independence Day.

Held on March 6, 2026, at the forecourt of Croydon Town Hall, the event brought together community leaders, dignitaries, and members of the Ghanaian diaspora to honour Ghana’s historic milestone. The ceremony formed part of worldwide celebrations marking Ghana’s independence from British colonial rule in 1957, a moment widely regarded as a turning point in Africa’s liberation history.

In Croydon, the event served not only as a commemoration of Ghana’s journey but also as a celebration of the vibrant Ghanaian community, whose cultural and social contributions continue to shape the borough. The occasion was graced by the Civic Mayor of Croydon, Richard Chatterjee, alongside representatives of the Ghana High Commission in the UK, led by Brigadier Gen. John Ayakwa.

Hosting the ceremony, H.E Vicky Newton, Wolmi Global Peace Ambassador to the UN and a Labour Politician, highlighted the significance of Ghana’s independence and emphasized the important role the diaspora continues to play in strengthening cultural identity and international ties. Speakers, including Atta Badu Snr. and Ethel Nutsugah, delivered remarks centered on unity, resilience, and the need for Ghanaians abroad to remain connected to their roots while contributing meaningfully to their host communities.

A key highlight of the event was the ceremonial hoisting of the Ghanaian flag, symbolizing freedom, unity, and national pride. Attendees observed the moment with a sense of reflection and celebration, acknowledging both Ghana’s progress and its future potential.
