NDC Quebec Branch joined Ghanaians from all walks of life at the Howard Park in Montreal, Quebec on Saturday July 5, 2008 to celebrate Ghana’s 48th Republic Day anniversary. This is the 2nd annual event organized by Ghana-Canada House of Quebec, in collaboration with the various Ghanaian groups and Churches as a way of bringing the Ghanaian community here together as one family.
NDC Quebec Branch members led by the branch Chairman, Mr. Kwaku Oduro-Bonsu and his Vice Mr. Smart Amegbe thronged the park for a barbeque party. NDC Quebec Branch used the occasion to create awareness among Ghanaians on the forthcoming December 7 general elections and urged them to use their influence back home to ensure a resounding victory for Prof. John Atta Mills and the NDC in the general elections.
Opening the event, the President of Ghana-Canada House, Mr. Yakubu Amadu called on Ghanaians to come together and work towards a successful and united Ghanaian community. He bemoaned the apathy of Ghanaians towards events organized by Ghana-Canada House and urged them to assist Ghana-Canada House in her efforts at lifting the Ghanaian community to a prosperous community just as other communities here in Canada are doing.
Among the dignitaries present at the event were: Hon. Christine Churcher, MP for Cape Coast, Hon. Rebecca Adotey former MP for Ayawaso West Wuogon and former Deputy Minister for Transport and Communications, Hon. Akwasi Agyei former MP for Akwatia, Nana Kwarteng-Amaning, Nana Asumadu-Duah, NPP Chairman of Quebec, Mrs. Eunice A. Danso, NDC Canada Women Organizer, Mrs. Patience Sordzi, NDC Quebec Women Organizer and Mrs. Stella Oduro-Bonsu NDC Canada Treasurer.
Several Ghanaian community elders including Nana Anane Peprah, Nana Obri-Yeboah, Mr. Jonathan Addo, Mr. Jacob Marmon, Mr, John Kiipo, Barima Akrasi-Sarpong and Nana Asare Barfour were also in attendance. The dignitaries took turn to visit each stand and advise Ghanaians to live in unity and be law abiding. They also reminded them not to forget Ghana, their land of birth.
The event started at 2:00 P.M. and ended at 9:00 P.M. The crowd mostly Ghanaian, danced to Ghanaian Highlife and HipLife music and socialized among themselves. The MC for the day’s event was Mr. Nii Okine Robertson. Ghanaian community businesses sponsored the event.
