Agricultural Institute of Canada to Honour Oppong-Anane

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(CCNMatthews - Oct. 17, 2006) - Dr. Kwame Oppong-Anane will receive recognition at the upcoming Agricultural Institute of Canada (AIC) Honours and Awards Ceremony. He will be presented with the AIC International Partners Award. The honours will be bestowed at the upcoming AIC Conference in Winnipeg, Manitoba.

Dr. Kwame Oppong-Anane FGSAP will receive the AIC International Partners Award in recognition of his work in Ghana to successfully develop and transfer appropriate technology to improve the welfare of women in rural communities in Northern Ghana, and to train and encourage resource poor farmers to take up livestock rearing for poverty alleviation and income generation. Under his leadership as the Ghanaian Coordinator of the Canadian Society of Animal Science-Ghanaian Society of Animal Production Partnership Project, Dr. Oppong-Anane's approach to agricultural development has resulted in empowered women's groups within their communities, increased income of women as well as improved health of households. The positive environmental approaches of the project have resulted in a significant reduction of bush fires in the area and an increase in biomass for livestock grazing. The awards presentation will take place on Tuesday November 7, 2006 at the Honours and Awards Luncheon during the AIC Conference: "Innovation for Growth-Trends and Successes Redefining Agriculture", at the Fairmont Winnipeg.
