UK scholarship students to be dragged to court

The 40 Ghanaian students on government scholarship in the UK have until Friday to pay their accommodation fees or be dragged to court.

Despite promises by the Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFUND) that the money for the students would soon be released, the students insist no money has been sent since October.

According to them, numerous appeals made to GETFUND have proved futile.

Speaking to Citi News, one of the affected Ghanaian students in the UK, Hakeem Tahiru, indicated that the arrears amounted to 1,550 British pounds.

According to him, the letter from the administrator of the housing facility stated that if the money was not paid by Friday, their files would be sent to the legal department and could lead to a court action.

He added that they had planned to send a delegation to the school's administration to intervene on their behalf.

“What we are doing is that, we are sending a delegation to the school administration to see what they can also do, if they can intervene and also get to the management team of the accommodation facility to tell about the new, measures being used to retrieve the money from them,” he said.
