Royalty Visits W.A. Perry Middle School

The Chief of Elmina, (Central Region), Ghana, Africa made a surprise visit to W.A. Perry Middle School, ”Home of Educational Excellence”, Columbia, South Carolina on Friday, April 25, 2003. As President of the Traditional Council, Nana Kodwo Condua VI detoured from his State Department itinerary to share thoughts, encouragements, and beliefs with the students.

Nana Condua was delighted to hear of the upcoming Richland One Student Exchange To Africa (ROSETA) June 2003 visit to Ghana. He was especially pleased to meet the school ROSETA delegate, George Ross, as well as, chaperone Sandra B. Taylor. Having been previously briefed on the success of ROSETA’S 2001 visit to the Elmina Slave Castle, and Ghana National College, he wished all participants a happy and safe 2003 experience.

Although, by tradition, the students had to speak to him through his interpreter, Martha Herley, the dialogue promoted a cross-cultural understanding of Ghana and Columbia. As a remembrance the school principal, Alfred Vanderpuije, presented him with a plaque.

Following the photo session, Nana Condua journeyed to Switzerland. There he will continue to consult with government officials regarding the Bakatue Festival, also known as the Celebration of Chiefs held in July. He should arrive back in Ghana on Wednesday, April 30.
